Lighting:
  • Hammer corals prefer moderate lighting, typically between 100-150 PAR.
  • Gradually acclimate them to new lighting conditions to avoid stress.
  • While they can tolerate higher light levels, they may display better coloration under moderate light.
  •
    Water Flow:
  • Moderate to strong water flow is recommended for hammer corals.
  • The flow should be sufficient to keep the coral clean and sway its polyps gently, but not so strong that it causes the polyps to retract.
  • Placement:
Ensure they have enough space to grow and extend their sweeper tentacles, which can sting neighboring corals.
  • Avoid placing them too close to corals that could sting them, and give them at least 6 inches of space.
  • Feeding:
  • While hammer corals are primarily photosynthetic, they can benefit from supplemental feeding.
  • Target feeding with foods like phytoplankton, coral pellets, or amino acids can be beneficial.
  • Ensure that nitrates and phosphates are kept in check, as they can negatively impact coral health.
