How to Care for Leather Coral in a Home Aquarium
Leather corals are hardy and great for reef tanks. Here’s how to keep them healthy:
-
Lighting: Moderate to high light is best. They rely on photosynthesis for energy.
-
Water Flow: Moderate flow helps them shed their waxy layer and stay clean.
-
Placement: Give them space away from aggressive corals—they can release toxins.
-
Water Quality: Keep stable reef parameters—temperature 72–78°F, salinity 1.023–1.025, and low nitrates.
-
Feeding: Not required, but occasional phytoplankton or coral foods can promote growth.
-
Maintenance: They may close up while shedding; this is normal. Just ensure water flow helps remove the film.
With the right conditions, leather corals grow well and add beautiful movement to your reef tank.
